Frequently asked questions
What is the profit-loss formula?
Profit/loss = sell − cost; percent = profit/loss ÷ cost × 100. Buying at 800 and selling at 1,000 gives 200 profit, 200 ÷ 800 × 100 = 25%.
Why is the percent taken on the cost?
Business profit and loss are always measured on the cost. Measuring on the selling price would understate the rate.
What if both prices are equal?
It shows zero — no profit, no loss.
How do I handle a discounted sale?
Enter the price you actually sold at. For the discount itself, see the percentage calculator.
Is wholesale profit calculated differently?
The formula is the same, but wholesale moves volume, so a smaller percent still means a bigger total. Always rate on the cost.
