Energy charge by slab
Slab (units)UnitsPer unitTaka
1–7575৳5.26৳394.5
76–15075৳8.5৳637.5
How this was calculated
  1. Units 1–75 × ৳5.26 = ৳394.5
  2. Units 76–150 × ৳8.5 = ৳637.5
  3. Demand charge: 2 kW × ৳42 = ৳84
  4. VAT: 5% of (energy charge + demand charge) = ৳55.8
  5. Total bill = ৳1,171.8

Being verified: the demand charge, VAT and prepaid rebate rates are still being checked against the official order. Your printed bill may differ slightly.

Rates: BERC residential (LT-A) tariff from the June 2026 billing month. The same for BPDB, DESCO, DPDC, NESCO, WZPDCO and Palli Bidyut. Meter rent and late fees are not included.

How to use

  1. Enter the units used, or choose “Meter reading” and enter last month’s and this month’s readings.
  2. Enter the sanctioned load (kW) from your bill. If you don’t know it, leave it at 2.
  3. Choose postpaid or prepaid.
  4. The total, the cost of each slab and the VAT update instantly. If you have a budget, choose “Units for a budget” to see how many units it covers.

Electricity bill formula

Total bill = (slab-by-slab energy charge + demand charge) + VAT

  • Energy charge: units in each slab × that slab’s rate, added up across slabs
  • Demand charge: sanctioned load (kW) × monthly charge per kW
  • VAT: 5% of (energy charge + demand charge)

Examples

Example 1: 150 units a month, 2 kW load

Step Calculation Taka
Units 1–75 75 × 5.26 394.50
Units 76–150 75 × 8.50 637.50
Demand charge 2 × 42 84.00
VAT 5% 1,116 × 5% 55.80
Total 1,171.80

Example 2: 300 units a month, 2 kW load

Energy charge 394.50 + 1,062.50 + 910 = Tk 2,367. Adding the Tk 84 demand charge gives Tk 2,451, plus Tk 122.55 VAT. Total bill Tk 2,573.55.

Example 3: 40 units a month (lifeline), 1 kW load

40 × 4.63 = Tk 185.20, demand charge Tk 42, VAT Tk 11.36. Total Tk 238.56.

Residential electricity rates 2026 (LT-A)

Monthly use Per unit
Lifeline (50 units or less in total) Tk 4.63
0–75 units Tk 5.26
76–200 units Tk 8.50
201–300 units Tk 9.10
301–400 units Tk 9.62
401–600 units Tk 15.01
Above 600 units Tk 17.35

What to know in Bangladesh

  • Slabs are stepped: your whole usage is not charged at the highest slab’s rate. Units in each slab are charged only at that slab’s rate, so even at 201 units the first 75 stay at Tk 5.26.
  • Lifeline: if total use is 50 units or less, every unit is Tk 4.63. At 51 units the normal slabs apply.
  • Big jump after 400 units: from unit 401 the rate rises about one and a half times (Tk 9.62 to Tk 15.01). Running an AC in summer makes this easy to reach, so staying under 400 units cuts the bill a lot.
  • Not included here: meter rent, late-payment fines and other adjustments, so your printed bill may differ by a few taka.
More: how to lower the bill and what “load” means

What is sanctioned load? It is the number of kilowatts approved for your home when the connection was taken, printed on the bill as “Sanctioned Load”. The demand charge is based on this number, not on how many units you used.

Three easy ways to lower the bill:

  1. Watch the slab limits: after 200, 300 and especially 400 units, every extra unit costs more. Checking the meter mid-month gives you a warning before you cross a limit.
  2. Keep the AC at 25–26 °C: each degree lower noticeably increases consumption.
  3. Replace old appliances: an inverter fridge and LED lights save many units over time compared with an old fridge and tube lights.

Frequently asked questions

What is the electricity price per unit in Bangladesh in 2026?

From the June 2026 billing month, residential rates are: 0–75 units Tk 5.26, 76–200 Tk 8.50, 201–300 Tk 9.10, 301–400 Tk 9.62, 401–600 Tk 15.01, and above 600 Tk 17.35 per unit. If you use 50 units or less in a month, every unit is billed at the lifeline rate of Tk 4.63.

How is the electricity bill calculated?

Slab by slab. The first 75 units are charged at the first-slab rate, the next 125 units (76–200) at the second-slab rate, and so on. The slab amounts are added, the demand charge is added, and VAT is charged on the total.

How much are the demand charge and VAT?

The demand charge depends on your sanctioned load: a fixed amount per kW each month. VAT is then charged on (energy charge + demand charge). This calculator uses Tk 42 per kW and 5% VAT, which are still being checked against the official order.

How do I get units from my meter readings?

Subtract last month’s reading from this month’s. For example, if the previous reading was 12,040 and the current one is 12,190, you used 150 units.

Do Palli Bidyut, DESCO, DPDC and NESCO charge the same?

Yes. Residential rates are set by BERC, so they are the same for BPDB, DESCO, DPDC, NESCO, WZPDCO and Palli Bidyut (BREB).

Is a prepaid meter cheaper?

Prepaid meters are reported to get a small rebate on the energy charge. This calculator uses 0.5%, which is still being verified. Demand charge and meter rent deducted at recharge can differ by company.

How much did the bill go up this time?

Users up to 75 units saw no increase, because BERC withdrew the hike for that band on 4 June 2026. Every slab from 76 units upwards went up, by about 16.7% on average.
