৳17,789

Your zakatable wealth is ৳7,11,544, so your zakat is ৳17,789.

Zakat becomes due once wealth at or above nisab has been held for a full lunar year. For personal questions (jewellery in use, long-term loans) please ask a scholar.

How this was calculated
  1. Gold: 2 vori × ৳2,30,772 = ৳4,61,544
  2. All assets added = ৳7,61,544
  3. Net wealth = ৳7,61,544 − ৳50,000 = ৳7,11,544
  4. Nisab = 52.5 vori × ৳4,316 per vori = ৳2,26,590
  5. Zakat = ৳7,11,544 × 2.5% = ৳17,789

How to use

  1. Choose whether to use the silver or gold nisab, following your scholar's view.
  2. Enter cash, bank and mobile banking balances, investments, money owed to you and business stock. Shorthand like "5 lakh" works.
  3. Enter gold and silver weight in vori; prices are prefilled from BAJUS and can be changed.
  4. Enter debts due now; they are deducted from your assets.

The formula

Net wealth = cash + bank balance + value of gold and silver + investments + money owed to you + business stock − debts due now Zakat = net wealth × 2.5% (only if net wealth is at or above the nisab)

Nisab = the price of 52.5 vori of silver (silver nisab) or 7.5 vori of gold (gold nisab).

Example

You have ৳1,00,000 in cash, ৳2,00,000 in the bank and 2 vori of 22K gold worth ৳4,00,000 at ৳2,00,000 per vori, and you owe ৳50,000.

  • Total assets = 1,00,000 + 2,00,000 + 4,00,000 = ৳7,00,000
  • Net wealth = 7,00,000 − 50,000 = ৳6,50,000
  • Net wealth is above the silver nisab, so zakat = 6,50,000 × 2.5% = ৳16,250

Good to know in Bangladesh

  • The nisab in taka changes whenever BAJUS changes gold and silver prices, so calculate with the price on your zakat date. This calculator shows the BAJUS price and its date.
  • The one-year condition: zakat is due once wealth at or above the nisab has been held for a full lunar year (hawl). Many people calculate every Ramadan for convenience.
  • Savings certificates, DPS and FDR are zakatable; whether to count only the deposit or the deposit plus profit is debated, so ask a scholar if unsure.
More: what is and isn't zakatable

Zakatable: cash, bank and mobile banking balances, gold and silver, shares and other investments, money owed to you that you expect back, and business stock held for sale (at selling price).

Usually not zakatable: the home you live in, a car and furniture for personal use, business equipment and premises, and clothes. For a rented-out property, zakat is on the saved rent, not the property value.

This calculator gives a general estimate. For personal situations (joint assets, business partnerships, long-term loans) please consult a scholar.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage is zakat?

2.5%, or one-fortieth, of net zakatable wealth — ৳2,500 for every ৳1 lakh.

What is the nisab?

The minimum wealth on which zakat becomes due: 7.5 vori (87.48 g) of gold or 52.5 vori (612.36 g) of silver, or assets of equal value. The taka amount changes with gold and silver prices; the calculator uses the latest BAJUS price.

Should I use the gold or silver nisab?

Scholars differ. Many advise the silver nisab because it is lower and more people pay zakat; some apply the gold nisab when only gold is owned. Follow your scholar's view.

Is zakat due on jewellery I wear?

Schools of thought differ. In the Hanafi view, common in Bangladesh, zakat is due on gold jewellery even if worn. Ask a scholar to be sure.

How do debts affect zakat?

Deduct debts and bills due now from your assets. How much of a long-term loan (such as a home loan) to deduct is debated; usually the current year's instalments are deducted.

Who can receive zakat?

The Quran names eight categories, including the poor, the needy, those in debt and travellers. Zakat cannot be given to your parents, children or spouse.
