Your BMI is 23.1: overweight on the Asian scale and normal on the international scale.

BMI is only a first screening measure; it does not account for muscle, age or body shape. It is meant for adults (20+). Talk to a doctor before making health decisions.

How this was calculated
  1. Height in metres = 1.68 m
  2. Weight in kg = 65 kg
  3. BMI = 65 ÷ (1.68 × 1.68) = 23.13
  4. Healthy range = BMI 18.5 to 23, i.e. 52 to 64.6 kg (Asian)

How to use

  1. Enter your weight in kg (or switch to pounds).
  2. Enter your height in feet and inches (or switch to cm).
  3. See your BMI, its category on the Asian and international scales, and the healthy weight range for your height.

The BMI formula

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²

  • Feet and inches to metres: (feet × 12 + inches) × 0.0254
  • Pounds to kg: pounds × 0.4536

Example

5 ft 6 in, 65 kg

  • Height = (5 × 12 + 6) × 0.0254 = 1.676 m
  • BMI = 65 ÷ (1.676 × 1.676) = 23.1
  • Normal on the international scale, but overweight on the Asian scale (above 23)
  • Healthy weight at this height (Asian): about 52.0 to 64.6 kg

What to know in Bangladesh

  • Why Asian cut-offs: the 2004 WHO expert consultation found that South Asians face notable risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease below a BMI of 25, so 23 and 27.5 are used as extra action points. This calculator shows both scales.
  • Check your waist too: belly fat is a strong risk sign, even with a normal BMI.
  • Not medical advice: talk to a doctor before trying to lose or gain weight, especially with diabetes, high blood pressure or during pregnancy.
More: the limits of BMI

Muscle vs fat: BMI only uses weight and height, so muscular people can show a high BMI with little body fat.

Older adults: muscle falls with age, so the same BMI can mean more fat.

Pregnancy: BMI isn’t used during pregnancy; doctors use the pre-pregnancy BMI to set weight-gain targets.

So: treat BMI as a quick, free first check, alongside waist size, diet, activity and regular health check-ups.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal BMI?

On the international (WHO) scale, 18.5 to 24.9 is normal. For Asians, a WHO expert consultation suggests treating 18.5 to 22.9 as normal, because risks of diabetes and heart disease rise at lower BMI.

What BMI counts as obese?

30 or more on the international scale; 27.5 or more on the Asian scale (high risk).

How do I calculate BMI from feet, inches and kg?

Convert height to metres: (feet × 12 + inches) × 0.0254. Then BMI = weight (kg) ÷ (height × height). For 5 ft 6 in (1.68 m) and 65 kg: 65 ÷ (1.68 × 1.68) ≈ 23.1.

What should I weigh for my height?

The healthy range runs from 18.5 × height² up to just under 23 × height² on the Asian scale. At 5 ft 6 in that is about 52 to 64.6 kg. The calculator shows the range for your height.

Is BMI different for men and women?

For adults the formula and cut-offs are the same for everyone, though body fat at the same BMI can differ between men and women.

Can I use this for children?

No. Under-20s need age- and sex-specific BMI-for-age charts. Ask a paediatrician.
