750 out of 1,000 is 75%, First Division.

How this was calculated
  1. 750 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 75%

How to use

  1. Enter your obtained marks and the total marks. Bangla or English digits both work.
  2. See the percentage, the division (first, second or third) and Distinction at 80%+.
  3. The “more needed” row shows how many marks the next band up requires.

Formula

Percentage = (marks obtained ÷ total marks) × 100.

Worked examples

Example 1: 750 out of 1,000 = 750 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 75%, a First Division. Distinction (80%) needs 800 marks, so 50 more marks.

Example 2: 430 out of 1,000 = 430 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 43%, a Third Division. Second Division (45%) needs 450 marks, so 20 more marks.

Division table

Percentage Division
80% or more First Division — Distinction
60% up to 80% First Division
45% up to 60% Second Division
33% up to 45% Third Division
Below 33% Fail

Note: boards now use the GPA system

SSC and HSC board exams now report results on the GPA scale, with a grade point per subject from the marks. To find the grade for a current result, use the GPA calculator. The division calculation on this page is for matching old results or rough equivalence.

More: the shortfall formula and the pass mark

Shortfall formula: next band’s percentage × total marks ÷ 100 − obtained marks, rounded up to a whole number when fractional. For example, climbing from Third to Second Division out of 1,000 needs 450 − obtained marks.

Pass mark: the traditional pass line is 33% — 33 out of 100, or 330 out of 1,000, scrapes a Third Division pass.

Fractional marks: 59.9% is still Second Division — a band counts only once its full percentage is reached.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for marks percentage?

Percentage = (obtained marks ÷ total marks) × 100. For example, 750 out of 1,000 is (750 ÷ 1,000) × 100 = 75%.

What do first, second and third division mean?

Under the traditional system, 60% or more is First Division, 45% or more is Second Division, and 33% or more is Third Division. Below 33% counts as fail.

What is a distinction?

Scoring 80% or more earned a First Division with distinction — a mark of exceptional achievement. This calculator shows the distinction note at 80% and above.

Is the division system still used?

No. SSC and HSC board exams now report results on the GPA scale. The division system still matters for old results, some job circulars and equivalence estimates. See the GPA calculator for current grades.

How do I find how many more marks the next division needs?

Subtract your obtained marks from the marks the next band's percentage means. With 750 out of 1,000 (75%), distinction needs 800 − 750 = 50 more marks.

What if my obtained marks are higher than the total?

There is no answer then — you will see an error message instead. Double-check the total marks and try again.
