How fares are set
Total = base fare + 15% VAT (Snigdha/AC only) + Tk 20 online fee (+ Tk 50 bedding on AC Berth)
- Shovon Chair has no VAT: total = base fare + Tk 20 when booked online.
- Snigdha, AC Seat and AC Berth add 15% VAT on the base fare (whole taka), plus the Tk 20 online fee; berths add Tk 50 bedding.
- Railway kilometres are not road kilometres — this calculator never estimates from distance; it reads each route’s fixed fare.
Example
Dhaka–Chattogram, Shovon Chair, booked online? Base Tk 450 + online fee Tk 20 = Tk 470. At the counter it is just Tk 450.
Snigdha on the same route? Base Tk 943 + 15% VAT Tk 141 + online fee Tk 20 = Tk 1,104.
Dhaka–Sylhet, AC Berth? Base Tk 1,465 + VAT Tk 220 + bedding Tk 50 + online fee Tk 20 = Tk 1,755.
What to know in Bangladesh
- Verified eastern fares (after pontage): from 20 December 2025, pontage on 11 bridges raised fares on 6 routes. Dhaka–Chattogram, Dhaka–Cox’s Bazar, Dhaka–Sylhet and Chattogram–Sylhet fares here are verified against that revision.
- Western zone is approximate: Rajshahi, Khulna, Mymensingh and Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar fares are still being verified and marked “approximate”. Confirm on e-ticket before booking.
- No AC Berth where: Dhaka–Mymensingh and Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar have no AC Berth service — the calculator says so when you pick it.
- Advance booking: tickets open 10 days ahead. Child concessions and other special rules are posted at stations and on e-ticket.

More: classes, VAT and bedding
What each class gives you: Shovon Chair is the non-AC sitting coach — cheapest, no VAT. Snigdha is a daytime AC chair coach. AC Seat is also a seat, kept in a separate coach on some trains. AC Berth is a night-train sleeping berth — the Tk 50 bedding kit (pillow and sheets) is added compulsorily.
The VAT rule: 15% VAT applies to Snigdha and AC classes only. Non-AC Shovon Chair is treated as VAT-free until confirmed otherwise. The Tk 20 online fee is per ticket — no fee at the counter.
What pontage means: when a train crosses a major bridge, extra notional distance is added to the fare calculation. The December 2025 revision raised eastern-zone fares this way — so blog prices from 2024 or earlier are now wrong.
